Dendral was later shortened from Heuristic DENDRAL, indicating its use of heuristic algorithms to make educated guesses about the molecular structure of a substance.

Mycin

Mycin was an expert system developed at Stanford University in 1972 to diagnose and treat blood infections. It was a pioneering project in the field of artificial intelligence.

The program could request further information about a patient and suggest additional laboratory tests to arrive at a probable diagnosis. It would then recommend a course of treatment.

Using around 500 production rules, Mycin operated at a level of competence roughly equal to that of human specialists in blood infections. It even performed better than general practitioners.

However, expert systems like Mycin lack common sense and understanding of their own limitations. This can lead to absurd conclusions, such as trying to diagnose a bacterial cause for a patient who has received a gunshot wound and is bleeding to death.

Mycin's inability to understand the limits of its expertise was also demonstrated by its tendency to act on clerical errors. For example, if a patient's weight and age data were accidentally transposed, the program might prescribe an obviously incorrect dosage of a drug.

The Cyc Project

The Cyc Project was a large experiment in symbolic AI that began in 1984 under the auspices of the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation.

The project's goal was ambitious: to build a knowledge base containing a significant percentage of the commonsense knowledge of a human being. Millions of commonsense assertions, or rules, were coded into CYC.

In 1995, Douglas Lenat, the CYC project director, spun off the project as Cycorp, Inc., based in Austin, Texas.

The system was capable of drawing inferences that would defeat simpler systems, such as inferring that "Garcia is wet" from the statement "Garcia is finishing a marathon run".

However, the project faced outstanding problems, including issues in searching and problem solving, which AI researchers call the frame problem.
